  1. Given the current State budget crisis, does the UC Discovery Grant (UCDG) currently have funds to support new innovative projects?
Yes, more than $15 million in State and UC funding is available to support new projects and competitive renewals of currently funded projects (up to four years). Combined with required matching funds from an industry sponsor, that means at least $40 million will be invested in research projects.
  2. How do I know if a company is eligible?
Eligible companies are typically for-profit firms with R&D operations in California related to the specific research plan presented in the submitted grant proposal. Further details are available here. If you have doubts about the firm’s eligibility, you can and should consult early with our staff by contacting sponsorinfo@ucdiscoverygrant.org and describing your firm’s operations and the proposed research.
  3. Does the UC Discovery Grant have specific IP policies?
No, the UC Discovery Grant does not have its own IP policies. If IP clauses are desired for the research agreement, standard UC policies apply. The UC Discovery Grant does not require IP clauses and does not impose any specific IP terms. All IP negotiations are managed by the PI’s local campus. You can identify the appropriate campus office through the following website: www.ucop.edu/ott/contacts.html.
  4. Who handles conflict of interest issues?
All conflict of interest issues are handled by the participating PI’s local campus. The UC Discovery Grant award requires that conflict of interest issues be reviewed and cleared by the local campus before State or University funds are released for an approved research project. The UC Discovery Grant Office does not play a role in either the campus deliberations or their decisions.
  5. What research areas does the UC Discovery Grant fund?
Five fields: Biotechnology; Electronics Manufacturing and New Materials; Communications & Networking; Information Technology for Life Sciences; Digital Media, as well as, a one-year pilot project for Energy and Environment; Health and Wellness; and Rapid Application of Nanotechnology.
We encourage projects that span two or more of the above fields.
  6. What is the probability of success?
Success depends upon scientific merit, relevance to the Program’s goals, a reasonable budget, and required matching support from an eligible private sponsor. The proposal approval rate varies from field to field, ranging from 40 to 70% on a round by round basis. All applicants are provided peer review comments.
  7. What are the typical funding levels per grant?
There are no specific upper limits for funding, but projects smaller than $50,000 in combined State and industry funding are discouraged. A central purpose of the program is to promote research projects of sufficient scope and size to produce meaningful outcomes. Typical funding levels, to date, have ranged from $50K- $2 million per year, for a maximum of 4 years. Higher amounts are also possible for projects supported by exceptional research plans and very well justified budgets. Matching funds from industry are required in all cases.
  8. Are there any restrictions on the amount of funding each campus can get from the UC Discovery Grant program?
No. Funding is provided on a competitive, peer reviewed basis and focused solely on the scientific and technical merit and relevance of the submitted proposals.
