The budget of an active UC Discovery Grant may be supplemented
with additional cash provided by the private sponsor(s) of that
grant. Additional IUCRP funds can also
be awarded within the usual policies on matching amounts.
Requirements and Criteria:
Successful applications will conform with the following requirements
and criteria:
- the supplementation will enable the Principal Investigator to intensify and expand the research effort without substantially changing the scope of the original research plan;
- there must be at least 6 months remaining in the original project period, and sufficient time to ensure completion of the proposed expanded elements of the research plan within the original grant period;
- the amount of the combined direct cost cash supplementation (i.e., Private Sponsor direct cash plus IUCRP supplemental award) may not exceed 25% of the combined direct costs of the original proposal;
- the request for grant supplementation must include :
- a budget for the proposed supplemental award period;
- a brief proposal addressing each of the following:
- how the original research project will be enhanced (noting that the scope may not be substantially changed);
- what specific changes or additions to the research plan are entailed;
- what specific changes or additions to the project personnel are entailed;
- how the new budget elements are justified by the amended research plan.
- a letter of intent to fund from the Private Sponsor(s) confirming the commitment of the additional cash supplementation and intention to amend the research agreement in support of the supplemental workplan and budget;
- if new project participants have been added and these individuals will have independent responsibility for the design, conduct, or reporting of the research, then a letter from a responsible campus official verifying that disclosures of financial interest have been submitted to the appropriate Conflict of Interest Committee/Office and specifying that either a negative finding was made or that any positive finding has been appropriately managed for each individual .
Application:
To apply for a budget supplementation, submit items 4a-4d via email to grantinfo@ucdiscoverygrant.org , through the local Contracts and Grants Office.
The amended research plan and budget will be peer-reviewed and approved by the Executive Committee. The principal investigator should provide sufficient detail to enable the peer reviewers to judge the quality and impact of the research plan and budgetary changes in comparison with the original research proposal. Please note that in cases where substantial changes would result, a competitive renewal application should, instead, be submitted near the end of the project period.
Upon approval of the supplemental award, a letter from the Contract and Grant Office certifying execution of an amendment to the original research agreement in conformance with the research and budgetary elements included in the supplementation request is required before supplemental funds will be released.
Addition or substitution of private sponsors is not allowed on an existing grant.
